Packing the Fifth Wheel

This is the time of year we get a lot of fog. This morning it was so bad and I'm so glad I didn't have to get out in it. It also hit me that I don't have to get up anymore to get to work on time. I felt sorry for Jim trying to get work this morning. It won't be long he won't have to go either.

I wanted to stay up later and chat but I lost our connection for some reason we're not staying connected to Road Runner so this morning I setup the MIFI and got some reading of blogs and emails done. As soon as I could see the car from the living room window I started loading it for the first round to the RV.

I wanted to meet up with a friend because he had drawers I thought I might be able to use for the pantry, he wasn't where I thought he would be and ended up going on the other side of town. What he had wasn't going to work so I went to Lowe's Hardware to check what they had. They didn't have anything that would work either for what I want to do. I then went to work to pick up my check, got something to eat and went to the RV.

The fairgrounds are very quiet during the week and there was NO ONE around except the guard car sitting in view of the RV. That gave me a bit of comfort knowing someone was watching it. I unloaded the car and got everything in it's place. I think I'm keeping a lot of stuff in the tubs. It fits in the closets and the contents won't go anywhere. It looks nice and I can move them if I have to. I also put up the shot glasses on top of the slide. We'll see if they stay on our trip to the park on Friday, if not I'll have to try something else.

I got home later in the afternoon and took the clothes out of the closet. I do have someone to give everything too so I'll get everything gathered up and be ready to send it along. It's getting there.

Tomorrow morning I'll pack the rest of the kitchen. I'm not sure where we'll be tomorrow night. Jim wants to be at the apartment because of the TV shows to watch that we can't get at the fairgrounds. I want to be with the RV because it's so lonely and I'm comfortable in it. It's suppose to be back in the 20's tomorrow night so it will be another cold night. We'll just leave the propane on and hope nothing happens. I will have to pull the hose off the outdoor connection and store it before I leave it.

It's coming along. I'm taking my time and learning to "slow down."

Oh what fun to arrange and set things into place. I too use tubs and baskets in some of the cabinets, especially the bathroom, as it keeps things from falling over.

Ya know, our rig came with all these wire rack pull out drawer/pantry things and I didnt like them, so we yanked em all out and sold them in our rummage sale.

I only left the one under the sink, it works great for sliding in and out the coffee maker and carafe from being stored down there during transit.

I am sure you will find what works best for you. Also, double sided sticky industrial velcro is an RV'ers FRIEND!

Oh, Dee!

I've SO SIMILARLY had the same experience in my recent retirement. Waking up to yucky weather and realizing that I don't have to brave that nasty stuff to get to work anymore!! It's a really great feeling.

You seem to have the packing under control physically AND emotionally since you've prepared for a long time. I always remember with an ache the mental picture of Linda Payne sitting on her garage floor crying as she sorted through all that she was going to have to part with.

You will find it will take time to establish your new 'speed'. For a few months after retirement I was getting up every morning making a list of 'to do's and thinking I had to have them all finished before dark. Now I still have that list but I'm learning to steer clear of deadlines when they aren't needed and learning to forget the list when something FUN comes up that we'd like to do instead.

Congratulations to you and Jim on this exciting new phase of your life!!

I can't wait to get to meet you someday in real life!

Hugs, Cindy

Hi, Congratulations on your new home. I remember well how thrilling the first few weeks were. Just wanted to comment on your shot glasses. In any store (Wal Mart) in the poster dept, they have something called poster tac. It comes in little strips in blue and green and you just pinch off a tiny bit and flatten it out and put it between the glass and the shelf. It doesn't take much.It will stay forever. I used a bigger piece for potted plants etc. Good Luck, June
