Sightseeing Through Smoke

(Madras, OR  Hi 102  Lo 55) -- We met up with Jim and Judy for breakfast in Madras, then they acted as our tour guides as we went sightseeing to some of the places they like in the area. There are several fires in the area causing a smoky haze all around us, so some of our photos didn't turn out as well as we'd like (Click on the pictures to enlarge them.)

Our first stop was the Crooked River Bridge Overlook.

The Crooked River runs 300 feet below two bridges, one is for pedestrians and the other is the highway we took to get here.

Our next destination was Smith Rock State Park. We were so involved in conversation that we missed a turn and ended up driving several miles before we caught ourselves and got back on track. We finally got to the park, which is an area of craggy rock outcroppings. They're unique in this area and stand out from the surrounding terrain.

There are several trails, some going up to the top of the rock formations, and one along a river.

We then went to meet Rose and Terry, a couple who are friends of Jim and Judy. They are the caretakers at the Round Butte Overlook, a beautiful scenic spot that looks 400 feet down on a reservoir and dam. They’ve been working there during the summer months for several years. They spend the winters at their home in Arizona.

They take care of the Visitors Center that looks out over the reservoir and dam area.

An earthen dam controls the water flow from the reservoir into Lake Simtustus, which looks like a river in the background.

So beautiful!

The reason the views are so hazy is because of the smoke from the fires in the area. It almost blocked out the sun.

We’re hoping the fires won't affect our trip to the Portland area on Friday. Two of the fires are between here and Portland.

We had dinner at Geno’s, a local Italian place, then said goodby for tonight. We’ll see Jim and Judy one more time tomorrow.

Tomorrow evening we're driving about an hour away to see Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band in concert in Bend, OR. Jim is a huge Beatles fan, so he's really looking forward to it. If we get back real late we may wait until Friday for our next blog post, even though it will be a travel day.

I think it's lovely that you were all talking and enjoying each others company so much that you missed the turn.
