(Carson City, NV) Hi 93 Lo 59 -- Last night's city fireworks show ended up being more than we bargained for. They were launched across the grass field behind us. The show started a little after 9pm, and everyone in our park was gathered at the fence to watch. Early in the show we noticed a few sparks were starting to fall to the ground and it wasn't long before a fire started. And it started growing... and growing!
Jim got this shot just as the sky was lit up by the fireworks, taken just behind our rig.
All this was going on about 200 yards away.
Unbelievably, they didn't stop the show. It was beautiful.
As the fireworks continued to explode above us, fire trucks started to show up.
Here you can see the fire below and fireworks above.
All of us RV'ers were joking about our insurance being caught up, and how rich we'd all be after all the lawsuits. But in actuality we weren't really too worried. A whole bunch of fire trucks arrived and the firefighters got it out pretty quickly. They stayed for quite a while to make sure no hot spots flared up. That sure made for a memorable 4th of July! The incident even made the 11:00 news on the Reno TV station.
Today we went to Linda and George’s for the afternoon. We watched the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. We'd always wanted to see it, and it was pretty good. Afterward the guys went out to get some sub sandwiches, and we were going to watch the NASCAR race from Daytona. But it was rained out and will be run tomorrow morning. We finally called it a night and came home.
See you tomorrow.

Personally, I think it is irresponsible for the fireworks people to keep on lighting them when sparks have caused fire in the dry grass. What if someone had been killed, or lost their RV or whatever. I don't think fireworks displays are worth the danger in these dry areas of the country.
Great photos of the fireworks and the fire! Glad the fire department didn't stop to watch the show. :)
I don't think I would have enjoyed the show too much once the fire started. Glad everything worked out okay!
A bit of excitement, eh?
No fireworks here in Alaska. Guess it's doesn't get dark enough this time of year.
An older man here in Montana just lost his home to fireworks. But it wasn't the organized fireworks - just some idiots setting them off near his home.
Often fireworks are wired together and once lit keep going until that string has all exploded..... It may not have been possible to stop the show once underway....
Too bad the show got a little out of hand. I love fireworks but now only watch them on TV. My oldest dog is deathly afraid of anything that goes "Bang".
With all the dry conditions it is surprising that this doesn't happen more.
