A Special Lunch - Southern Illinois Attractions

(Marion, IL) Hi 73 Lo 53 -- It was sunny and great to wake up to sunshine and no rain this morning. It did get cloudy by noon, but still no rain. It was just a great day in a new spot with a different backyard. We're both enjoying this lifestyle so much.

We did our usual computer reading and playing games and catching up on news when we got up, in case something happened overnight that we needed to know about.

Today we had a lunch date with our step granddaughter Ellice, who is a student at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, 16 miles from here. With the help of the GPS on Jim's smartphone we went right to Pagliai's (Pag's) Pizza in downtown Carbondale. (I have no idea how people got around years ago without GPS, especially RV'ers.) Ellice got there about the same time as we did, and we had a great time eating pizza and discussing her college courses and what she'll be taking next year. She's currently in finals week and is looking forward to driving home this weekend. She plans to major in either sports medicine or physical therapy. We wish her the best. We left her with hugs, knowing we'll see her again in a month or so when we get to the Chicago area.

We came back to the RV and I did my one mile walk and Jim did the laundry. When I got back I got a magazine from the office on Southern Illinois. We lived in Central Illinois for several years while in the Air Force stationed at Scott AFB.  We don't know a lot about this part of the state, but it looks like there's a lot of things to do for outdoor types. There's even a cave, and a place called Little Grand Canyon. There's hiking trails, fishing, boating, and many wineries in the area.

On the way to lunch we passed a huge lake between Marion and Carbondale, Crab Orchard Lake. There's been so much rain in the area that the water level is really high. There were people fishing standing on picnic tables that were in the water. I wish I had gotten a picture of it.

We didn't do much of anything the rest of the evening.

I'm thinking Crab Orchard NWR might also be in that area.
