Beaufort Waterfront

(Beaufort, NC) Hi 78 Lo 59 – This morning I had a follow up appointment to read my blood test results from Monday. Jim went with me and read on his Kindle in the waiting room. Afterwards we went to the Beaufort waterfront to walk around. There seems to be quite a few stores that have closed because of the economy. We had a great lunch at a deli. I had a chicken wrap and Jim had an Italian sandwich.
We walked the length of the Beaufort waterfront, which is about five blocks. It was a beautiful day, and there were very few people around. It’s past the summer tourist season. Here’s a few pictures. (Click on picture to enlarge).

There’s gates on the private docks to keep people away.

We checked out on of the few places where you can watch boats being built by hand. This area is famous for hand-built “skiffs.” All of the craftsmen are of the older generation. This is a skill that will slowly die out if the younger generation doesn’t show more interest in it.

There was a model building shop on the premises, where an older gentleman was building this WWI era destroyer. The detail is incredible!

Here’s another one of his works.

We spent a couple hours walking around, and got some ice cream and browsed some of the shops. Jim was browsing through a book on the history of Morehead City (where he was born) and discovered it contained some photos of his grandfather’s shrimp boat that were taken in the 1950’s. He was so thrilled that he bought the book.
Later in the afternoon we went to Jim’s mom’s apartment for a family dinner. Mom prepared a delicious meal of southern rice and shrimp. Southern cooking just can’t be beat. Thanks Mom for a great dinner!
We had a wonderful day!
