Jim pulling out among the pines.

As we traveled through southern Colorado the scenery changed quite a bit.

More mountains in the distance.

Then there’s nothing. My new saying is, "There’s nothing before you get to something."

A real neat mountain in the distance.

We took the Raton Pass into New Mexico, another new state for Tumbleweed. The pass wasn't bad, about 20 miles of occasional 6% grade up and down. We traveled through New Mexico by car when we moved from Florida to California back in the 80’s. We were in a (very small) 1980 Toyota station wagon with our two small boys. What a great trip that was!

Bear signs near Raton, NM

A moose crossing sign. Click on the picture and check out the smaller sign in the background. You can also see evidence of the recent fires in this photo.

Coming around curves and cresting hills always brings new sights.

Then there’s more of nothing but you, the road, and the hills.

When we saw this we knew we were close to the campground. This is Capulin Volcano National Monument. We plan to get a closer look at it tomorrow.

Our campground. The sites are gravel, the roads are gravel, the lawns are gravel... the whole park is gravel.

Chance, the owner, is super nice and went out of his way to make us feel welcome. Tomorrow we’ll take some pictures of the tiny town of Capulin.

Hi Dee and Jim,
Welcome to a new state.
Raton Pass wasn't that easy for me, I was driving a motorhome and towing a travel trailer. As always, it's the going down, not the going up, that is the worst!
Happy Trails, Penny.
I like NM more than any other southwestern state. Enjoy your time there.
Gravel campgrounds are the norm in the northwest. New Mexico and Arizona are full of them. Enjoy your trip!
