National Police Hall of Fame and Museum

(Titusville, FL)  Hi 76  Low 67 -- Dee took a day off from blog writing today and turned it over to me. After our morning routine of checking the news and emails we headed out for an active day. And what a beautiful day it was. I must say the weather is wonderful here, sunny and high 70's to around 80. Perfect Florida weather!

First, here's a few more photos of our park. We both really like it here, and we may check into the staying here for the winter next year. We'll stop at the office and find out the cost tomorrow.

Here's our site.

The pool area.

It's so pretty here.

We drove east from our park about two miles, turned south on U.S. 1 and took a leisurely drive through Titusville and on south through Cocoa. We were on a mission to photograph the hospital  in Rockledge where our younger son was born. We'll email the photos to him, he should get a kick out of that.

U.S. 1 skirts the Indian River, which separates the Florida mainland from Cape Canaveral. A familiar sight when looking across the river is the NASA vehicle assembly building, where the space shuttle was assembled before it was transported to the launch pad. It's one of the largest buildings in the world by volume, and you can see it from miles away. Here it is from a normal perspective.

And here it is zoomed in with my telephoto lens.

On the way back north we stopped at the National Police Hall of Fame and Museum in Titusville. Nick Russell, one of the bloggers we both read regularly, wrote recently about his visit there and it really looked like a neat place to see.

The lobby area is full of police cars and motorcycles from years past.

The museum has many exhibits. Some of the things you can see are: memorabilia from the wild west (guns, wanted posters, badges), depression-era gangsters and mobsters (Al Capone, John Dillinger, etc.), and serial killers. Many firearms of all types, including home-made guns and weapons. Information about counterfeiting, crime scene analysis, and drug detection. Here some photos:

I had never heard of a tramp chair. I'll let you read about it. (Click on photos to enlarge.)

Of course, I had to try it out. The whole front is like a big door and closes against you. I couldn't imagine spending a night in that thing!

Look who's in the gas chamber... Dee, what did you do!

Well, since we both had our "sentences" carried out, the electric chair remained empty.

There was even a working guillotine. The sign said the blade was locked, but it also advised against putting your head in it for a photo. Didn't have to tell us twice! (It also said don't touch the blade, but I did... it's sharp!) I like the basket to catch the head.

While we're on the subject of death penalties, I got the biggest kick out of this "death sentence" written by the famous Judge Roy Bean back in 1881. He was quite the wordsmith. How about that fourth paragraph!

One way to start a lively conversation among fifth wheel owners is to ask what brand of truck is best. For all you Ford owners, you'll enjoy this. It's an endorsement of Ford by none other than Clyde Barrow, of "Bonnie and Clyde" fame.

A touching 9/11 memorial included a small collection of debris from the twin towers.

We really enjoyed our visit to the National Police Hall of Fame and Museum. We've had a little fun describing some of the things we saw, but we don't want to forget that the facility is also a monument to those who serve and protect. And the exhibit areas encircled the Law Enforcement Memorial, which is dedicated to those who lost their lives while protecting the peace. To any of our readers who are in, or have been in law enforcement, we salute you!

Tomorrow we're on the road again, heading farther south. This is a great life!

P.S. Sorry for the funky color scheme on part of the above text. We had a technology problem with the update and had to copy and paste some of it from an e-mail backup copy of the blog.
