First Day of Our Summer Travels

(Mayport Naval Station, Jacksonville, FL) Hi 71 Lo 46 -- Thank you to all the new readers for following the blog. Thank you also to the readers that have been following us since the beginning of our journey.

It was COLD at 7:00 when we got up. Shorts was not on the attire list, but sweatshirt and long pants were.  When the sun came up it did warm up before we pulled out. It was one year one month today that we started out on our full time journey.

We went to breakfast in town so we wouldn't mess up the kitchen. We returned to the park with our tummies full, and got hitched up and on the road by 9:45, a little before our target time of 10:00. It was a great travel day. The only time we slowed down was in Orlando. It was stop and go for about five miles. I can't imagine how bad the traffic is in that town during the summer months when school is out. At around 2:30 we pulled into our favorite RV park, Pelican's Roost, at Mayport Naval Station. We again got a "front row" site, right across the street from the water. The sites are set up so motor homes have their front facing the water, which means normally a fifth wheel's back window would face away from the water. But like the last time we were here, we parked "backwards" so we can look out our window and watch the ships go by. We've been here twice before and we took tons of pictures. This time I'll take pictures of NEW things that come our way.

Something new since we were here in October. A new version of a navy patrol boat.

This is our view from our back window.
This is where I'll be if we're in the park, but if not I'll be at the ocean, which is about a half mile away.
The view of the "front row" from across the street near the water.
We had an early dinner and watched the sunset.  I made a photo album in Picasa of all the photos from the last two times we've been here. It's listed on the right side of this blog.

We give this park a rating of 10. It has paved streets, good wifi and satellite, concrete pad to sit on, full hook ups (meaning water, sewer and electric), and free laundry. But you do have to be active or retired military to get on base. That gives us a nice feeling of security. We have something in common with everyone here and we talk about the bases we've been stationed. We timed our arrival perfectly; tomorrow is the park's annual Guest Appreciation Dinner at the clubhouse.

This is paradise, and we're going to be here the next six days.

Mayport has a lot of memories for Sam, he left on a carrier from there (The USS Shangri-La CVA 38.Maybe theres an oldtimer there that remembers those old WW2 carriers. Wish there was a way I could camp there some day, but I did not stay in to retire.Maybe someday they'll count retired law enforcement with military years. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna.

Pelican Roost is a great location, but like many others we have decided to not go there anymore.

It has the worst staff of any military campground we have been too.
