Back to Where We Started

(Columbus, MS) Hi 79 Lo 58 -- It was another fine morning to hitch up and be on the way today. We left a little before 10 so we missed the "rush hour" traffic that comes into the base. The travel was great, with rolling hills and big green trees. We’re sure not in Florida anymore!

I think this is red clover along the road. It went for miles in Alabama.

Before long we arrived at the Mississippi state line.

We arrived in Columbus, MS around 2:15pm. There's no famcamp at nearby Columbus AFB so we're staying at the Dewayne Hayes Recreation Area, a COE park about 3 or 4 miles from the base.

I titled this blog "Back to Where We Started" because this was the first Air Force base Jim was assigned to back in 1970. We were here for two years, and during that time our first son was born. We moved three times during those two years, including a move into base housing. It's going to be fun tomorrow to drive around and check out the addresses where we lived, to see what they look like 40 years later.

This park is right on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, and we have a full hookup, 50-amp site. The rate is $18 per night, but we got it for half price using our National Parks pass. It's a nice park, but it's right on the borderline of having too many trees for our taste. We sure can't complain though, especially for the price we're paying. It is cooler parked back in the shade of the trees.

Our site was more of a challenge than usual to back into. Each back-in leads to two sites, so Jim had to swing the rig from one direction to another to get it in. He did a great job.

There are a lot of vacant sites. Normal for a weekday I guess.

The river is actually set back some from the park, so there are very few sites that  are right on the water.

A pavilion for get togethers.

We’re here for two nights. Tomorrow will be a driving around day, to see if anything looks familiar. :) We hear some jets flying overhead, which brings back memories. It's the sound of freedom!

I'll trade you our treeless COE park for your treed one! :) Can't beat the price with the Senior pass! Looks like a beautiful place. We loved Mississippi. Hope you enjoy it.

We started packing the motorhome today, moving tomorrow! We heard it is about 46 degrees at 7 pm in PA where we're going. Brr-rr

Glad you had a safe trip to Columbus. We were there last October for a few days so I could go to the races. Have fun exploring!

You mentioned that you have a full hook up site. Isn't that unusual for a COE park? Looks like a real nice campground.

What a nice campground! Of course we like the trees... looks nice to see all the green and lush scenery. We are still brown here with a few tiny leaves starting to poke out.

We live in this area and it is one of favorite campgrounds. We enjoy watching the barges going up and down the river.
