Taking Care of Details

(NC State Fairgrounds, Raleigh, NC)  Hi 63 Lo 47 -- The first thing after a big egg omelet breakfast was to get to mom's apartment to find some things. I knew where most everything was from helping her organize things back in April. I'm so glad I did that. Jim helped me get her financial documents in order and also did our laundry. (We took the opportunity to use the laundry room in mom's apartment building.) Together we tried to figure out what comes next, since we know she won't be going back to her apartment.

We went to the hospital and picked up a couple slices of pizza at the cafeteria before heading to mom's room. Mom loves the meals they've been giving her. We stayed with mom for awhile, and I got to talk to the doctor. We meet with the hospital social workers tomorrow morning. They will determine where mom will go for therapy. Her sodium level is coming up and she's moving better getting up and down from the bed.  Also her blood pressure is coming back up to normal. But her overall physical and mental condition will require that she have 24/7 support. Once we find the right place to provide that, we'll be relieved that we won't have to worry about her. But I'm sure the transition will be hard on her, which will in turn be hard on us.

We have a busy week ahead. For those that have been through all this, you understand what we're going through. I came home early afternoon and crashed. I'm not physically tired, but mentally exhausted. We'll hopefully have a lot more info tomorrow.

Very best wishes to your Mom, and you two. I am sure the hospital social workers will have a great place to recommend.

Dee, we do understand your situation. I think I mentioned in an earlier comment about Mer's sister and her strokes and what residuals she has been left with.

After experiences with the Wake Forest Care center for a year, we got her moved into a Carillon facility out on Hodge rd near Knightdale.

They have a number of other locations around the state so they know how to operate facilities like this. Unlike all of the other places we have investigated, Carillon has really delivered the kind of care that has put our minds and hearts at ease. If things happen, we get a call, even if it is not very significant but might be an indicator of a developing issue.

They actively engage each resident on whatever levels that are suitable and each wears a GPS pendent that pinpoints their location within the facility should they need assistance.

Being a newly constructed facility this year, they have been gradually filling it but I don't know the current availability of rooms.

It is a facility for assisted living but not a nursing home. They do have an Alzheimer wing. One friend of my SIL is in the assisted living wing and his wife is in the Alzheimer wing. That has got to be nice for them.

Just thought I would mention it since we were very disappointed in a lot of the assisted living facilities we have investigated in the area over the past two_+ years.

Good hunting, guys. You will get through it and I am confident that all will be better for it.
