A Day Out for Mom

(NC State Fairgrounds, Raleigh, NC)  Hi 67 Lo 43 -- Another restless night, but it's soon going to end.  Jim stayed home today while I went to get mom and bring her to the apartment to go through all her craft items. She has very little space, but we're thinking most of what she uses for making cards will fit a large footstool that she has. We stayed three hours but didn't get a lot accomplished. There's a lot to go through. She has water colors, paints, ink pads and a lot of colored pencils. She was a little overwhelmed and hesitant to make decisions.

She did well in the car, but was in pain a lot of the time while sitting and trying to go through everything. I feel so bad for her, but she may have to face the fact that some things won't be the same, and doing her crafts may be one of them. As we age and can't do some of the things we take for granted, we have to accept it. People that have been through it know what I mean, but why it's not talked about more I'll never know. This blog post is for us to look back and say, "I remember those times".  It's also for those that will be facing the care of parents. We had to leave by 2:30 to get her back to Carillon for physical therapy.

Mom choosing what she would like to take with her.

I got back to the RV but it took awhile. This is the last weekend of the fair so it's packed. The weather is perfect. We're so glad we're here, but it sure takes a lot of time to get in and out of the fairgrounds area. We have to allow for extra time whenever we go anywhere.

We met some friends for a birthday get together tonight at a great pizza place called Rosatis. It's Chicago style pizza and it was very good. Tomorrow we'll be taking out the last of mom's stuff from the apartment. We'll clean Monday and turn in the keys Friday, IF we stay on schedule.

Definitely not something I'm looking forward to. But how wonderful that you were with her to help her through it.

Do they have crafts at her assisted living complex? Perhaps you could talk to them and see if they could use her things. Then she would have them available if she wanted to do them.

This must be quite difficult for both you and her.

God bless.

roamingwhenwecan had a good suggestion, I think.

Or maybe they could be stored somewhere and she could just take a few items at a time to the new place?

It sounds like she's cooperating, which is a big plus. My Mother never wants to get rid of anything!
