Touring the Backroads

(Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada) Hi 80 Lo 60 – Nice sunshine today so we did something we haven’t done much since we left Florida. We went for a long walk on the Heritage Trail, which is part of the Cataraqui Trail that runs from Ottawa to Kingston. We walked for about an hour, winding along the bank of the Rideau Canal.

After our walk Sandra and Gordon came over. Gordon needed to buy some sheets of plywood and we took him in our truck to pick them up. It’s handy having a truck when you need to carry big stuff. Once we got that delivered to  his garage, Gordon took us on another driving tour of the back roads of eastern Ontario, many of them gravel roads. We saw many split rail fences, which are unique and very pretty. You don't see them very often in the U.S.

They make a yard or field look great. Most are made of hickory, which lasts a long time even though they're unpainted.  We enjoyed the day out and being with Sandra and Gordon.

When we got back we decided to go out to dinner. The traffic is bad coming in and out of the park so we walked across the canal and downtown to Rob Roy’s Restaurant and Pub.  We sat outside on the patio and had a good view of a small dam on a branch of the Rideau Canal.

We walked back and settled in for the evening. I’ve been watching for sunsets, but it’s just not happening.
I did find out something that is amazing. The total population of Canada is 33,739,900 people, which is LESS than the state of California (36,961,664)

You might find this interesting as well-population by city.

Love those fences! They remind me of the fences we saw in Gettysburg.
