It was three years ago today that we decided to go fulltime. Why? because we could, so the planning began and we started informing everyone a few months later. There has been no one trying to talk us out of it or wondering why we'd think of such a thing. I've wanted to go fulltime since 1996 when Jim retired from the air force. We had military friends that did it, so we thought it over and Jim just wasn't for it. We've always been warned you BOTH have to be on the same page for fulltime.
We were with a couple that were fulltime and staying at the fairgrounds near us. They were filling their water tanks and showing Jim all that's involved. I was talking to the lady about how to pack the fifth wheel and what can be done on the road. She told me of some cool places to go and to stay in warm weather in the winter and keeping cool in the north during the summer. I went out thinking it's a lot of work, and pushing back the idea that we would ever do it. Jim came out telling me, that looks like something I can handle and would like to do that. The idea was born.
We hit the internet, hours, days, weeks and months. We searched for how to become fulltimers, what rig would be best for us. We liked the idea of the MH but yet didn't like to have the drivers seat in our living space. We both really liked the fifth wheel and the extra space it allowed without the drivers area. We started going to the RV shows and by the second year we could go up to one and know if we liked it our not.
We set a possible date of March 2012, when jim was able to retire again. I could retire in 2010. We started to save for our new life on the road. In June 2008 we went to the RV-Dreams rally. It's a group of people that follow the owner of the RV-Dream journal which I found through another RV forum. Through the rally seminars we learned we didn't have to wait, if we worked things out, we could go immediately. We chose another date, March 2010. That's when Jim could get to his 401K account without penalities. Our next step was for me to save for a truck and he'd save for the RV.
That brings us today, we now have our truck. Jim picked it up today, 3 years to the day that we started the idea of fulltime. We are now proud owners of a 2007 GMC, 3500, white, Duramax diesel with Allison transmission, dually truck. It's just like the truck we had only with a bigger wider back end. (Jim says just like him). Our next step is to sell the condo. If we can sell quickly, we'll see if we can get a deal on an RV and live in it before hitting the road fulltime. It's close. The deal three years ago was when we get the truck we sell everything we can and sell the condo. That day is here.
Days left to put the condo up for sale 3 mths 25 days
