Movie Day - Beach Time - Ships - Windy Days

(Mayport Naval Station, FL)  Hi 70 Lo 66 -- We've been enjoying our down time. No deadlines, commitments, or appointments.

Last Wednesday we went to see the movie Pawn Sacrafice. It's a wonderful movie about the chess player Bobbie Fischer, his match with Boris Spassky back in the early 70's and his downward spiral into mental illness. It was very good. We love this time of the year for movies. The studios usually release their best "grown up" movies in the fall, many of them Oscar-worthy.

We've been getting in some great beach time lately. On Friday we took a drive to Huguenot Memorial State Park, which is across the St. John's river from us. Here's a view of its sandy dunes from our RV.

On the way we had lunch at Singleton's Seafood Restaurant just outside the base in Mayport. (Click on the photos to enlarge them.)

Shrimp boats on the St. John's River.

The St. John's Ferry is about a quarter mile from Singleton's. It cost $6.00 each way for the short 10-minute trip, but it saved us about 20 miles of driving.

It's interesting that the ferry ride is part of Highway A1A.

We've been to Huguenot Memorial State Park before, but the road onto the beach was closed at the time. This time it was open, so we were able to drive right onto the beach.

Here's the view of our RV park from across river.

Here's a closer view. Our RV is the large one in the middle of the picture.

Some of the views on the beach.

Jim is reading while enjoying the warm sunshine.

There were very few people on the beach, and we enjoyed a nice couple of hours. And it's really neat to drive right onto a beach.

We continue to enjoy watching the ship traffic. This is the destroyer USS Roosevelt.

This rather small submarine, flying the flag of Canada, left after a visit.
Saturday night a cold front came through and it turned very windy, with gusts up to 30-35 mph. We've been rocking a lot ever since. It's been so bad we've even had a touch of motion sickness. :(

The waves are huge crashing against the rocks on the jetty.

Jim went for a walk on the (windy) beach today and took a couple of photos. The ocean looks angry!

The winds are great for parasailing.

See you in a few days.
