Dickens RV Park

(Moncure, NC) Hi 67 Lo 60 -- This is our last day in the Raleigh area. We've had a great time getting back together with friends.

There have been some changes to the highways around Raleigh since the last time we've been here. They've completed a large portion of the outer loop (I-540). It saves time and miles when we have to go to the western part of Cary. When they designed the outer loop the plan was to make a part of it a toll road. However, there's apparently a law on the books around here that you can't charge a toll on an interstate highway. (It doesn't apply everywhere because there are a lot of turnpikes in the midwest and northeast that charge tolls and are also interstates.) So a large portion of the outer loop is designated as State Road 540, rather than Interstate 540. That allows them to collect tolls. There are no toll booths. You either pay with a transponder on your windshield (our E-Z Pass works) or they mail you a bill. The toll is around 80 cents if you have a transponder, and $1.25 if they have to mail you a bill. Sure doesn't seem like a very efficient way of collecting tolls. What are they thinking?  The other change is in a couple places they’ve put in roundabouts. I guess that’s the new thing to do around the country. I guess it makes the traffic flow a little easier.

Today I got out and took a few pictures of the park.

Our view from the back window. The dry creek bed never did fill with water.

It’s filling up fast this week. This park is the close to the Shearon Harris nuclear plant. They’re doing a shutdown and maintenance on it, and many of the nuclear workers live in RV's and travel around the country and do maintenance on different nuclear plants.

The office, laundry, and bath house.

The owners live in this house behind the park.

I can see this from our RV, and it kept moving. At first I thought it was a birthday party or something like that.

It’s Halloween decorations, and the horse and little figure on it move in the breeze.

In the distance is some kind of plant (it's not the nuclear plant) that has smoke/steam coming out all the time. This is what it looks like at night.

This is a great park at a great price for the Raleigh area. It’s farther from town than staying at the fairgrounds, but it’s $15 a night here and the fairgrounds is $25. We’ll be back next time we’re in town.

Tomorrow we’re moving to Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in Havelock. It's near Morehead City on the coast, where Jim’s family lives. They opened a brand new famcamp in July and we’re anxious to see it. We're also looking forward to spending a couple of weeks with our family before we head to Florida for the winter.

Very nice pictures! I hate roundabouts. The traffic planners just want to make it more like Europe, and I didn't like roundabouts there either.

We have never been to Cherry Point, so will be interested in how that famcamp looks.
