Sunday at Home - Air Force One

(Buckley AFB, Aurora, CO) Hi 95  Lo 68 -- We had our usual Sunday at home today. Jim did the laundry this morning and I took a long walk on the running/walking path that goes around the whole base. I walked about 3/4 of a mile, then it went uphill and the sun was getting a lot hotter so I turned back.

I did a VOIP chat (internet phone call) with our good friend Gary in North Carolina. It was great hearing from him. It's so cool to be able to talk to someone on a laptop. Communications have come a long way!

By mid-afternoon the clouds were building up and I got to watch storms over the mountains. There was a couple of large lightning bolts, with wider streaks than I've ever seen before. There was rain all around us except here in the campground. I love watching the weather and how fast it changes over the mountains.

We heard on the news that President Obama was coming to Aurora this afternoon to visit the families of the theater shooting victims. We didn't think much about it, but early this evening Jim happened to think that the President would probably land here at Buckley AFB. Air Force One normally lands at a military base if one is nearby. We didn't think much about it until late this afternoon we looked over toward the runway and saw the distinctive blue and white tail section of Air Force One sticking up above the ridge that's between us and the flightline. Well, we obviously missed the landing, but we were not going to miss the takeoff. We kept an eye on that tail, and finally around 6:30pm we saw it start to move. Jim rushed to get his camera and went up on the roof of the RV to get some pictures.

It turned right in front of us to get into takeoff position.

It doesn't matter what your political views are, seeing this sight can't help but bring a lump to your throat!

Up, up, and away, back to Washington.

Although the reason for the President's visit was nothing to be joyous about, it was a treat to see Air Force One up close. It's a beautiful aircraft, and a proud symbol of our great country. It was something we'll remember for a long time.

in your travels check out the air museum outside of Dayton,Ohio. You can even go inside the plane that carried pres. Kennedy's body back from Dallas. to see everything you have to be very active on your feet,or, spend more than one day there to see everything.

Great shots of Air Force One....wonder if the weather is ever going to cool down there. I'd love to come visit CO but not when it's so hot!

I had the honor to watch AF One land at Andrews one time. I was there to pick up the Coast Guard Commandant who was traveling with then President Bush.

It is quite a sight to see.
