A New State: Nebraska

(Offutt AFB, NE)  Hi 71 Lo 64 – Neither of us slept well so we both got up earlier than usual. We’re both excited about heading west to see new areas and states. We were on the road by 9:30.

I was expecting a lot more flat land like Indiana, but it’s not that way all across Iowa. It’s really pretty with a lot of rolling terrain. I’m looking for when we make the transition from hilly to totally flat. I’m also waiting to see if we notice the humidity dropping. Where will it start, or will we even notice. We passed a couple of wind farms, but they weren't nearly as big as the one we saw in northern Indiana.

We hit some construction slowdowns, but nothing that kept us from moving along at a decent pace. This is Tumbleweed up ahead of me.

It was a smooth trip until we got about 50 miles from our destination. Jim told me on the ham radio that his Pressure Pro tire pressure monitor was beeping an alarm. The outside right rear tire on his truck was at 54 pounds, when it's normally at 65 lbs (cold). We thought about pulling over, but since he has three more good tires on the rear of the truck we decided to reduce our speed and press on. He didn't feel any change to the handling, and he kept an eye on the pressure. It went down slowly, a pound every few miles. When we pulled into the Offutt AFB Famcamp it was down to 31 lbs. He's already looked up a tire repair place near the base and will have it taken care of on Monday. Believe me, this would have been more serious if we had a single rear wheel truck, so we're very glad we have a dually.

We crossed over the Missouri River in Nebraska, a new state for not only Tumbleweed, but for us too. Neither one of us has ever been in Nebraska.

We pulled into the Offutt Base Lake Campground. They had some severe weather last night, so the ground was very wet. The park is right on a lake, and the road runs out onto a peninsula.

The view out our back windows. Unfortunately the view was partially blocked later in the evening by a rig that moved into the site in the photo below to the right.

We relaxed and got everything set up for the five days we’ll be here. We have full hookup with 50-amp electric. We have free wi-fi, but it's a little slow. And we also have Verizon 4G if we get too frustrated with the speed of the wi-fi.

Jim got out the grill and he cooked up the brats and steak that we bought yesterday at the Amana Meat Shop and Smokehouse. Just another day in paradise!

Oh glad you were able to reduce speed and limp on in Aren't tire pressure monitors great?

Hopefully it will just be a nail or something and be fixed and put back on the truck again.

Al and I lived in Bellevue for years because both our fathers were stationed at Offutt at SAC Headquarters. You have to try Stellas hamburgers in Bellevue...they used to make the best burgers ever.

if you get up to the northwest corner of neb.; you gotta check out Scotts Bluff area. A lot of history there. There is still evidence of conastoga wagon ruts on the rocks, also pony express history. there is also a benchmark and i think a cache is also there.
there is also a great steak restaurant called "Whisky Creek".
