Annual Car Show – Movies

(Avon Park, FL) Hi 62 Lo 44 -- We have an annual car show here in the park every January, and this year's show was this past Sunday. The weather was perfect and there were around 100 cars on display, which brought out the crowds. We noticed this year several of the show cars were for sale.

Here’s a few pictures of our favorites. (Click on the picture to enlarge them.)

Remember window trays for those quick meals at the drive-ins?

Neat hubcap decoration.

We both liked this '59 Ford hardtop convertible.

Jim likes '60's and '70's muscle cars, like this Chevelle SS.

1977 GMC RV. We talked with the owner. He and his wife live in it four months out of the year. It has 125,000 miles on it.

This car had a couple of scratches on the rear fender. Note the message on the band aids.

A snack is always welcome. Jim got a hot dog, chips, and soft rink for $3.50.

The clubhouse was th place to take a rest, eat your hot dog, or get some ice cream.

They played oldies music and had drawings for prizes throughout the day.

We always enjoy the car show.

The park has filled up. There is one empty site on our street, which will be filled when our friends Jessica and Harry arrive this weekend.

We took in a couple more movies this week. Monday we saw a movie that we hadn't heard much about called Whiplash.

It’s about a student at a prestigious music conservatory who wants desperately to be a great jazz drummer. He's driven almost to the breaking point by a tyrannical instructor, played by J.K. Simmons (the funny Farmer's Insurance guy in the commercials). It's been nominated for Best Picture, and Simmons is nominated for Best Actor. It’s one of the best movies we've seen in a long time, and we highly recommend it, especially if you like big band jazz.

Tuesday we went to see Blackhat, a cyber thriller about computer hacking.

Blackhat (2015) Poster

It was a very mediocre movie, but I really like the lead guy, Chris Hemsworth. If we had it to do over again, we'd wait to see this one on video.

Today was the annual spaghetti dinner at the clubhouse. We love it and so do a lot of others, the place was packed. When we got back home we spent the rest of the evening with computers and TV.

I’ve been trying some new crocheting ideas. I made this little owl in a couple hours. He’s only a couple of inches high. It's an example of 'amigurumi', which I have a harder time pronouncing than actually doing. :)

I also learned how to crochet a design in an afghan. This one goes to the Linus Organization.  I hope you can make out the bear. (Click on the picture to enlarge it.)

Today I had my pre-op appointment for my cataract surgery next week. I'm still a little nervous about it, but the medical staff (and all my friends) have been very encouraging. I get my first eye done next Tuesday.

See you in a few days.

You go to movies often. Some thing we seldom do. Say hi to Jessica and Harry.

I like those old cars and remember the trays at the diner that fit on the open window.

I had cataract surgery on both eyes a few years back - it's not bad at all, although I think I took a pain killer the first night. You'll do fine.

The cataract surgery is no problem as long as they keep you numbed up enough and be sure they suck out all the pieces of your old lens before they insert the new one. I had to go back in and they had to cut into my eyeball and vacuum out all the pieces they missed on the day they did the cataract surgery! On top of that then I needed switches in two places on the eyeball and boy did they hurt when it came time to have them removed.:-(
