If you recall in our last post we weren't sure where we were going to head from Austin. We thought we had a reservation at a small RV park in Ozona, TX, about 200 miles west of Austin. But on Friday evening we found out we were given a reservation by mistake and the park was full. Jim did some quick research yesterday morning and found out there are vacancies at the Goodfellow AFB Recreation Area, on Lake Nasworthy just south of San Angelo. So we headed out and had a very smooth 225-mile trip. (Click on photos to enlarge them.)
As we headed west out of Austin the terrain changed dramatically as we went through the Texas hill country. The hills are very pretty, with agriculture areas mixed with brush and cactus. With every turn or crested hill we wondered what we'll see ahead.
The land then flattened out as we entered into the plains.

We stopped along the road for a restroom break, right in front of a llama farm.
Whenever people talk about Texas in the spring, they always comment about the Texas state flower, the Bluebonnet. It’s a delicate little flower and they’re along the roads and in fields.
We arrived at the Goodfellow Recreation Area and got set up just before it started a light rain. This is a military facility and they've recently added some new water/electric sites off to the side of the main campground. The word must not have gotten out yet, because there were about 10 open sites when we got there.

There’s several cabins right on the lake.
Lake Nasworthy is several miles long, and wraps around the camping area. You can rent sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and fishing equipment. The park manager said rentals are very slow right now because the water level is so low.
There are plans for more cabins, a swimming beach, and even a 12-room motel in the future. They also intend to install sewer hookups and a bath house in the new area where we are.
Except for a walk around the campground, we stayed in and did a few household chores today. Our freezer was badly in need of defrosting, so I did that, which also gave me an opportunity to inventory the frozen food items we have on hand. Jim hosed down the truck to remove some of the surface dirt, and then watched sports during the afternoon. It was warm but cloudy with occasional misty rain most of the day.
Tomorrow will be a longer travel day than usual for us, almost 300 miles. We're headed to Artesia, NM, which is halfway between Roswell and Carlsbad. So we'll have a couple of days to check out aliens and caverns. :)

That looks like a good famcamp for our Texas trip in the fall.
West Texas has a whole lot of nothing. Actually, if you look hard enough, there is a few things out there.
How fortunate you found out you did not have that reservation before you got there and not after.
Hopefully we'll be in Texas next spring. I want to see those bluebonnets!

What a shame you didn't have time to check out San Angelo. That Famcamp has grown so much since we were stationed there.
Good to see you made through Texas. We were in Louisiana last week for our family reunion. We had real nice weather and enjoyed the new RV. We look to head north this summer if all goes well.
