It's All about FOOTBALL!

(Scott AFB, IL) Hi 77 Lo 59 -- Cloudy, light rain. Today is all about football. First a report on last night's game. Our boys' alma mater, the O'Fallon High School Panthers, were invited to play in the Great American Football Classic at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.

Our grandson Kendall is on the O'Fallon Little Panthers football team (9-year old division), and before last night's high school game all of the Little Panthers were allowed on the field during warm-ups. It was a very big deal for youngsters.

Kendall is number 51 in the middle of the line. His dad Frank is behind him with his head turned.

When he later joined us in the stands he was beaming! What a thrill for a young guy. The game was a blow-out. O'Fallon won 50-3, with all the points scored in the first half. The game started after 9pm, so we stayed to watch the halftime show before we left. The O'Fallon High School Marching Band is one of the best in the state. Both of our boys were in the Marching Panther Band back in the late 80's and early 90's, and I was a chaperone. It brought back a lot of memories watching them.

Today was more football. It was our grandson's first game of the season. This is his fourth year playing on the Little Panthers. He plays tackle on offense and linebacker on defense. Today they played the Belleville Little Devils. I don't know why, but until today I thought he played flag football and never thought it would be the real thing. I know very little about football except they get into huddles, then try to stop the other team. Now as a grandmom, I cringe when I see all those little bodies piling into and on top of each other, especially when our grandson sometimes ends up on the bottom of one of those piles! I'm glad neither of our boys played... band was a lot safer! But our son Frank loves football and is an assistant coach. It was amazing watching the kids play.

Kendall ready to play.

Here he is (#51) right before making a tackle on the ball carrier.

The Little Panthers won the game 13-6, so they're off to a good start this season. We'll get to see a couple more games before we leave the area. After the game we went out to eat and talked more football. Kendall later showed me his "playbook". I knew there was a reason why I can't follow the ball, it goes one direction then the other and never twice  the same way.

After dinner we went to Frank's house and I played with the kids while Jim and Frank watched the NASCAR race. I tried to learn how to ride the Rip Stick but my old knees wouldn't allow me to try it for very long. After a fun evening we left and got back home at 10:30.

It was a great day with the boys!

Todd played flag football but as a mother I was so glad he didn't want to pursue it into high school. I, too, cringe when somebody gets tackled. But the kids are having such a good time. And I bet it was so exciting for them down on that huge field.

My grandson played HS football and grandaughters were cheerleaders, so I did my time on those hard bleachers. Makes you very proud, doesn't it. Chris
