Scary Night - Governors' RV Park

(Casselton, ND) Hi 74 Lo 50 -- Last night was wild! We have a way of being in the path of tornados just about every summer, and this summer isn’t any different. We thought that by avoiding the midwest in the springtime we'd get some relief from severe weather this year. But nooo... last night we were woken up at 3:30am by hard rain, lightening and thunder. We got up and checked the radar and saw that severe storms were coming our way. We got dressed, turned on the TV to a local channel, and watched the storm coverage. But then a tornado warning was issued for our county so we made our way through hard rain to the Days Inn motel next door. (The RV park is part of Days Inn.) There were already several people there, and more came in after we got there. We all watched the local coverage on the TV in the lobby as the weather man reported "rotations" in our county, but south of us. It was 5:00am before everything passed and we went back to the RV and went back to bed. We heard today that a tornado touched down in another town, but fortunately it only took some trees down. There was no major damage from wind or hail. We escaped another severe weather scare.

When we got up this morning you wouldn't have known we had severe weather a few hours earlier. The skies were clear and we had cooler weather today. We're expecting 40’s overnight tonight.

A little about Govenors' RV Park. The park is part of the Days Inn/Governors' Conference Center. The name comes from the fact that five North Dakota governors were born here in Casselton. We like RV parks that are connected to motels and casinos. We know we don't have to go far for a meal. :)  We're right off the exit to I-94, and the park fills up every afternoon.

The sign for the park is visible from the interstate.

Our site. A nice long pull thru. We have 50-amp electric, water, and sewer.

There’s a restaurant on site. We had a snack there last evening, and the food was pretty good. We plan to have breakfast there before we leave tomorrow morning.

There’s an indoor pool with a water park. Our copy of the park rules said that if we used the pool or exercise room a "resort fee" may be assessed. Sheesh!

I even got a nice sunset behind the grain silos.

We're leaving in the morning, so this is our last night in North Dakota. Jim picked up a North Dakota fact sheet that has some interesting information about the state:

* The unemployment rate is the lowest in the U.S. at 2.6%. We've seen help wanted signs just about everywhere around here.

* Winters in ND can be as low as minus 60 degrees, and Summers can be as high as 120 degrees.

* North Dakota is the number one producer of wheat and barley in the U.S.

* Since 1960 the ND State University football team has won 11 national championships. That’s more than any other college football team.

We’ll see you in two days.

Sure glad the severe weather bypassed you. It is always scary when camping and the treat of tornados is imminent.

We always stay at that campground when we're in that area. Sure glad the tornado missed you guys. We've just had wind and more wind here in SD.

I saw the golf ball sized hail in Fargo on the news, and was hoping you guys were ok!

Glad it turned out to be just a weather scare. Happy travels in a couple of days.

We too absolutely hate those storms but mostly the ones that creep in during the wee hours...so glad you guys were safe and had a safe haven to go to.

We try to avoid tornado country in the spring or summer.
