Windy and Dusty Travel Day

(Sikeston, MO) Hi 82 Lo 59 – Last night Jim went by himself to downtown Memphis to Autozone Park to see the Memphis Redbirds play the Oklahoma City Redhawks. The Redbirds are the AAA minor league team affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals. Jim's a big Cardinal fan, so he was looking forward to seeing their future stars.

He had a great seat, four rows from the field and right next to the Redbirds' dugout.

Here's another view from his seat.

The bright screen in this view is a 60' by 60' high definition video screen. Jim said it had a crystal clear picture, like watching an HD flat screen TV in your living room.

Jim was very impressed with Autozone Park. He's somewhat of a ballpark buff, and he said it's considered the nicest ballpark in the minor leagues. He wouldn't argue with that. He had a good time, but unfortunately the Redbirds lost 11-2.

On his way into the park he saw these carriages lined up on the street waiting for customers.

And this is what they look like after dark.

By the way, Jim took all the photos above on his HTC Rezound smart phone. He's really impressed with the camera in that phone.

That catches us up with last night. This morning we took our time moving out of Tom Sawyer’s Mississippi River RV Park. We had only one road to travel today, straight up I-55 to Sikeston, MO. It was very windy but we watched the weather closely and there was no rain or severe weather on our route. Neither of us felt the 30mph winds inside our vehicles. We hear a lot of stories about motorhomes being affected by wind on the road. Jim very seldom experiences any swaying or instability during travel on windy days. I don't know if it's because fifth wheels are more stable, or that Jim has dual rear wheels. But we haven't been out west yet... I understand they have REALLY high winds out there! :)

Today's travel was almost like being out west in the desert. See that dust?

There was even a few dust devils that looked like mini tornadoes. We used to see them in the fields when I was growing up in Indiana.

We had a quick trip of only 2 1/2 hours. We're staying the next two nights in Hinton RV Park in Sikeston. It's a nice park just off I-55. We're on a gravel pull through site with full hookups, including cable TV. For the first time Jim is leaving the satellite dish in the back of my car and we're using the free cable.

I’ll take some more pictures of the park tomorrow, but here's a couple of quick views.

Less than a mile down the street is the main reason we stopped here, Lambert’s Café, home of throwed rolls. We’ve been there before, but it was a very long time ago. It’s a must stop for anyone who travels through this area. They're known for the hot rolls that they throw to you. They have very large portions of all their menu items, but they also have workers walk around with pots (they call it "pass arounds") offering all you want of fried potatoes w/onions, macaroni and tomatoes, black-eyed peas, fried okra, and sorghum and molasses for your hot rolls. It’s a great atmosphere, and we left STUFFED!

The rolls are five inches across. Here's mine slathered with sorghum.

I had catfish with white beans and cottage cheese, along with black-eyed peas from the "pass arounds".

Jim had fried chicken with baked potato and baked beans. I forgot to get a picture of his meal.

Jim is checking out the piano player. She played "honky tonk" music the whole time we were there.

An end to another great travel day. We’ll see what’s around tomorrow, then back on the road on Monday. Unless there’s a threat of severe weather. So far we’ve missed them, and they've missed us.

In 2008 we took a 7,000 mile round trip with our F-250 and our 5'er and got pushed around the road from cross winds. Since 2009 with the F-350 the winds don't move us, but our traveling friends with their Ram 3500 single rear wheel get tossed around by the winds.

Those rolls do look yummy.

Be Safe and Enjoy!

It's about time.

We love Lambert's. We have been there a couple of times and always enjoyed it. The wind does not bother me in the fifth wheel but gives Max trouble on the motorcycle. Be careful with all the storms in the midwest.

I try to not stop there because it takes me a week to get back to normal eating....... But of course if it has been a while what the heck....

We like the RV park, and usually try to get a spot out in the back part.. Its quieter out there....
