Tour of Western New York

(Colden, NY)  Hi 84 Lo 64, Scattered Showers - We knew it was going to rain off and on today, but we really wanted to get out and see more of the area.  Dom and Ellen offered to drive us around what's called the Enchanted Hills area. We took them up on it.

They picked us up around noon and we headed south to the Allegheny Mountains. It was a beautiful trip. We went up, down, and around many mountain ridges. The scenery reminded us a lot of the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina.

We finally got to Ellicottville, a quaint small town that looked like a European village. (Click pictures to enlarge)

Ellicottville is home to Holiday Valley Ski Resort.

One of the many ski slopes at Holiday Valley. They look a lot different in the summer than in the winter.

We drove up a narrow winding road to the top of one of the mountains. This is the view looking down.

On the way up we passed many large (and expensive) private chalets.

We ate lunch at a quaint little place called Flavor Haus. Most people wouldn’t find it unless they knew where it was located. They’re known for their foot long hot dogs (their motto: "Everyone likes a big weenie"). All of us loved the food.

Dom took us by a house that had this little white church in their front yard. It has an altar and kneeling rail inside, but you have to close the door to have room to kneel. This is so cute. Dom found it on one of his geocaching trips.

Did you know there’s buffalo in Buffalo?  Dom took us by a buffalo ranch, hoping we'd see some grazing. Boy, did we! We found this nice size herd, including babies. We sat and watched them for a few minutes while waiting out a rain shower. We counted over 20 babies, all sticking close to their moms. It was quite an unexpected treat.

We came back to the RV park and found several more RV's arrived for the weekend.  Tomorrow we’re going to downtown Buffalo and Niagara Falls. My knee is doing really well. I kept ice on it as much as possible, and since I didn't do a lot of walking today it should be ok for tomorrow’s activities.

Thank you Dom and Ellen for another great day. It’s been a joy being with you guys.

Especially loved the buffalo in Buffalo :) We'll have to look for them.

While in Buffalo, try "Beef on Weck" which is almost as Buffalo as Buffalo Wings. The bread, kummelweck, is German and is covered with kosher salt and caraway seed. The beef is sliced thin and piled high. Add lots of horseradish and you are set! It is my favorite sandwich ever!

Take care of that knee. Maybe you should consider giving up that full contact geocaching you're doing...go back to a less physical sport, like shuffleboard? ;c)

What a sweet little church!

No, we didn't know there were buffalo in Buffalo. That's pretty awesome.
