Memorial Day 2011– Traveling

(Ft. Meade, MD)  Hi 91 Lo 72 – HOT AND MUGGY!   Memorial day is to remember those that gave their lives for our freedom.  I hope everyone gave a thought or two to the men and women that serve, or have served, our country.

Last night just before going to bed our propane alarm went off. We have a dual propane/carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. We reset it and checked the stove to see if there may have been a propane burner left on on. Everything OK there. We didn’t SMELL anything. After we reset the alarm it came on again after about five minutes. Jim turned off the propane tanks and we made sure the refrigerator was on electric. It came on again. We were very puzzled. If it had been the CO detector we would have been very worried, because you can't smell CO. So after making sure the propane was off, we turned on the ceiling fan, opened our roof vents, and cracked a couple of windows, and Jim took the panel off the wall and disconnected it so we could get some sleep. We know we shouldn't do this, but all of the gases that can be detected by the propane alarm have a smell, and we didn't smell anything. This morning Jim rewired the panel, reset it, and it's been fine ever since. The detector is on the wall right at the floor and over our basement, so maybe something in the basement set it off. We checked this morning and didn't see anything spilled. We'll see if it goes off again tonight...

Today was a travel day, so we were up at 8:00. After a very abbreviated morning routine, we got packed and hitched and were ready to pull out by 10:30. We both commented to each other about how smooth the departure routine has become. Today it went so well that we were worried we might have forgotten something. We started to walk over to say goodbye to Mike and Terri and ran into them when they were on the way to see us off. We’ll see them again. But we sure do miss them already. What a wonderful two weeks with a great couple. We feel we've made some very good friends.

We only had about 130 miles to travel. We took US 1 for the first 40 miles or so, to avoid the "I-95 Speedway" as Jim calls it. We then picked up I-95 at Fredricksburg, VA and took it all the way through the Washington DC area and to Ft Meade, MD, about 20 miles north of Washington.  Jim missed the turn to the gate we were supposed to enter, but he knew the way around to another gate. All that studying of Google Maps pays off. :)

Here at the Ft. Meade RV Park we have full hookups (50-amp electric, water, and sewer). I suffered the heat long enough to get a couple of pictures. I'll take more later this evening when it cools down and post them tomorrow.

Our pull thru site, with a concrete pad long enough for both vehicles to fit.

After we got set up it took both air conditioners to get the rig cooled down. We'll relax this evening, and tomorrow we're going to Hagerstown, MD to visit Jim's aunt and uncle. We're only here till Thursday, so we don't don't have much time for sightseeing this time. But you can be sure we'll be back in the future to spend some time in the DC area.

You may find that your detector needs to be replaced. We know of others who had the same problem. According to the manual that came with ours, they need to be replaced every few years. Good luck!

They can also be set off by various propellants used in spray cans, like hair spray, deodorants, cleaners, and anything else that uses hydrocarbons in it.

I had a leaking can of WD 40 setting mine off a couple of years ago in the basement. Air flow just happened do draw it up past the LP detector.

I know you don't have pets but animal "hydrocarbons" often set them off, also, even humans.

Yes, check the date of manufacture on the detector. Typically, about 5 years is the recommended replacement interval but some types of detectors can become contaminated by exposure to certain vapors which ruins the detector forever after.

Just keep going north until you find COOL and then let us know where it is. You picked a great time to get out of NC.

Enjoy guys!
